FPDN is leading sector-strengthening efforts in the First Nations disability sector across Australia, with a specific focus in NSW supported by the NSW Government.
FPDN is working across the entire service system with partners to help build a community-controlled disability sector that is responsive, inclusive, accessible, and empowering for First Nations people with disability. Nationally, this work is guided by the Disability Sector Strengthening Plan (DSSP), which was developed to support the achievement of Priority Reform Two under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. The DSSP outlines high-level priorities and actions at a national level.

How we do it
While much of FPDN’s work includes sector-strengthening elements—and our training packages are designed to support this—there are also specific initiatives currently underway or in development, including:
- Culture is Inclusion Assessment tool and corresponding training modules to support organisations to better meet the needs of First Nations people with disabilities
- A Needs Assessment of the First Nations disability sector in partnership with Jumbunna Institute
- Dr Scott Avery’s research to expand Culture is Inclusion
- Workforce Mapping and strategy to identify workforce challenges and solutions
- Community Leadership Program
- Supporting the development of jurisdictional First Nations Peak organisations.
