The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was adopted by the General Assembly on 13 September 2007. On 3 April 2009 the Australian Government made a formal statement of support for the Declaration. By issuing the Declaration in this pocket-sized format, the National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples and Australian Human Rights Commission wish to make these important human rights standards available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, Government officials, human rights workers, academics, legal practitioners, civil society, business and the private sector as well as others wanting to promote the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia.
